2024 FRINGE PRODUCTION

Welcome to Actually Acting's inaugural Fringe production.

We love our Fringe, don't we? There is a such a buzz and excitement and Adelaide really comes alive. Being part of this is really special, especially with such fabulous plays and perfectly suited actors to take our audience on this journey.

Know Your Role is a special play for me. When we brought it to life in July 2023 for Actually Acting Youth Theatre, I was concerned that the themes might be too controversial and our actors could find it too challenging. But the overwhelming feedback was that the audience actually needed to know how our young people felt, plus our actors loved the opportunity to engage and immerse themselves in these scenes. We decided to take the show on tour, and in September 2023 we performed at SOAP (Seymour One-Act Play Festival) in Victoria. We received unanimous praise and took home 5 awards. Most importantly, our actors (and many of their parents who joined us) had the opportunity to bond in a new way and have become a true theatre family. They hold each other up – just as empowered people do, to paraphrase a very intelligent cheerleader.

I first read the play Our Place about 4 years ago and I just knew I needed to bring it to Adelaide. It's written as a youth theatre production and usually performed with teenage actors, but I felt that having intergenerational actors would give it much more weight, and honour the characters' stories without mocking them. Having six adult actors in our cast has been a dream, most with many many shows under their belts, and they have been an inspiration to our younger cast members. Life is a journey and positive role models and connection is absolutely vital. We also have had the pleasure of welcoming three child actors - Remi, Amity & Anna - who are all incredible. They have been completely self-reliant, acting as professionals in this business and possibly stealing the scenes from their more experienced acting partners!

Our youth theatre auditions are coming up next week, so please help us by sharing the word about the work we do, and perhaps get involved!
